Meet Ian Baker

Ian is a character who roams the Wits Braamfontein campus often wearing sweat pants rolled up to his knees, paired with funky knee high socks and a suit jacket. You will often find him rolling tobacco or stuffing his pipe with some. He is an enigma of character who the students of Wits often see but barely acknowledge, some must say he’s the talk of the town. I had the opportunity to photograph him and learn abit about his story. Ian Baker comes from a wealthy family who flourished during the apartheid era, when apartheid came to an end his family empire was shaken and was distributed amongst them but his family deliberately left him out of the inheritance. I can quote him saying that “ever since apartheid ended it feels like I’ve been waiting at a red robot for 27 years, waiting for it to turn green” Ian is a sweet soul who speaks with a small undertone contempt. My aim in photographing him was to capture the pure essence of that sweetness in him with the hint of contempt that lingers silently.
